First may I apologise for the delay on updating the Blackstar hi-fi reviews. Ive had a few technical problems but I am up and running again !!! The first record Ive picked to review is a Blackstar hi-fi favourite - IRENE + THE SCOTTS - IM STUCK ON MY BABY (SMASH). This is a classic piece of raw soul. I don't know why It doesn't get the plays it well deserves !!! Irene punctuates the stabbing brass section with tremendous gritty vocals from the start. (Imagine Marva Whitney growling over a wicked brass section and your getting there !!!!).It boils along with just the right amount of hooks and infectious twists and turns to make this a classic. It's well worth hunting down as this record will have its day sometime £!£!!£!. THE ACCENTS - NEW GIRL - (MPAC) - a record introduced to me by a fellow Blackstar hi-fi DJ. Don't know how I let it slip by unnotice for all these years !! This quality piece of vinyl stems from 1963 and the doo-wop/impressions seed is definatley in there. It kicks of with a dirty politically incorrect whistle of the highest order and a simple but slightly distorted guitar riff and the song just slips into top draw harmonies from the group. The great Clifford Curry is the lead vocalist here so you get a yardstick on the quality. Always a head turning tune at Blackstar gigs and im sure it will remain so for some time. DANNY WHITE - MISS FINE MISS FINE - (FRISCO). With a lable like frisco you would expect this thumping piece of RnB to be from the bay area !!! It's actually from New Orleans but sounds as though it should be straight out of Chicago !!!! It's a total RnB stormer and has all the ingredients you would expect for it to make that grade. The heavy heavy brass section push Dannys vocals for the spotlight all the way. It's a well put together tune and if you don't know it track it down (or book us for your gig) A dancers dream and one gritty RnB tune. SIDNEY BARNES - I HURT ON THE OTHER SIDE (BLUE CAT). Great record. A well known tune and criminally underplayed nowadays. I just want to bring some attention back to it !!!!! Ive always put this version above the Jerry Cook version which has a very polished production when played next to this raw number. Again made for the dance floor - its steady but constant pace and the girls backing vocals injecting at just the perfect moment make this a floor packing gem. I love it. It's been in my collection years and will be in there for many years to come !!!! CHARLES EARLAND - YES-SUR (ELDORADO). Don't know much about this tune and nobody can help me with any information. All I can say is its a truely awsome instrumental,a Hammond tune to take on any dancefloor !!!! It's a beast of a tune !!!! 100mph from start to finish and drenched in screaming hammond. You can visualise Charles rocking that instrument scenseless in the recording studio !!! I belive it's a one off tune he did for Eldorado before going on to Prestige records. Any more info will have to be supplied by you good people !!! As I said - It's a record to set any dancefloor alight !!!! Is it worth tracking down ??? YES-SUR !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
